AI Application Project in Essay Grading at ULIS-VNU

On September 19, 2024, the University of Languages and International Studies (ULIS), VNU-Hanoi, organized a seminar in collaboration with OMT Online Management Training Joint Stock Company. The event served to introduce a new online platform that leverages Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the automated scoring of writing assessments.

The project, officially named "AI for Higher Education Writing Assessment: A joint project between OMT and The Faculty of English, ULIS VNUS", aims to provide teachers with essential knowledge on utilizing AI tools for grading and evaluating English writing proficiency.

  • Key takeaways from the seminar included:
  • Objective: Dr. Vu Thi Thanh Nha, Dean of the Faculty of English, stated that the project goal is to ensure that participating teachers become proficient in applying AI for marking written exams.
  • System and Application: Dr. Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh introduced the KTA Online system and discussed the current use of AI in scoring common writing tests such as VSTEP, IELTS, and VNU Tests.
  • Technology Development: OMT, the technology partner, detailed their development process, which involves applying cutting-edge AI tools to build specialized databases and integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) for accurate paper scoring.
  • Global Insight: Professor Antony John Kunnan, a Fulbright scholar who has contributed to the development of well-known automated writing scoring software globally (such as Duolingo, My Access, and Write to Learn), shared his valuable experience on AI application in international assessment standards.

In November 2025, within the expansion phase of this project, AI Robotic is invited by ULIS and OMT to pilot smart exam proctoring at ULIS. With extensive experience in intelligent classroom and school monitoring systems, AI Robotic offers an AI-enabled solution that strengthen fairness, transparency, and reliability in online and in-person assessments, ensuring that the test taker remains focused on the exam environment.

Beyond facial and behavioral analysis, the system continuously scans the surroundings for prohibited items such as mobile phones, books, notes, or the presence of another person. When the AI detects anomalies, it applies an intelligent rule-based inference engine to classify suspicious activities and determine whether potential exam misconduct has occurred.

By integrating AI Robotic’s technology, ULIS can enhance exam security, reduce proctor workload, and ensure a fair testing environment for all learners while advancing its commitment to innovation in education.
